LATE 18TH CENTURY CHINESE WEDDING CABINET ON CHEST OF DRAWERS
96cm x 46cm, h 199cm
The cabinet and its chest of drawers were painted with a deep red lacquer that has taken on a brownish patina over time. The carved doors, which have had a light restoration, have large oval insets as well as two smaller oval insets, top and bottom, all in black lacquer with gilt decoration. The larger central ovals depict a display of martial arts in a courtyard, while the smaller ovals at the top and bottom of each door depict flora and fish respectively. The cabinet's interior retains its original painting of flowers and birds on a green background. There are two carved the drawers in the chest below the cabinet and both have oval brass pulls. The cabinet has been recently fitted with six clear tempered glass shelves and two recessed over head led spotlights, which make the piece ideal for use as a display case or bar. The wiring for the lighting can be easily adapted for UK or US electrical outlets.
